Weapon Wrap

April 30th, 2012

That’s a wrap for directing the new Crystalyne music video for ‘Weapon’. A big thanks to Ryan Grani (DOP), Matt MacLellan (Producer), Harvey Glazer (Executive Producer) and not to mention MuchFACT.

The day went smoothly and the footage looks beautiful. Make sure you follow Crystalyne on twitter to get updates on releases. It couldn’t have been a more gorgeous day for shooting. I think we are all now lobster face.

Time for some coffee.

Directing then editing on repeat

April 24th, 2012

Just wrapped up a new music video this past Sunday. It was a small yet beautiful looking piece which I’ve already started the editing on. Looking at the footage I’ve been quite impressed and can’t wait to dive even deeper into it. I’m actually editing this whole video on Adobe Premiere CS5. I’ve been using FCP7 for many years now, but with everything changing in the industry and the flop of FCPX I decided to broaden my horizons, which I believe is always so important especially when you enjoy learning. The Premiere experience has been great so far. One of my favourite parts about it is the playback engine. It’s very smooth and seems to handle a heavy timeline well with multiple layers of video. As well its very convenient when going in and out of other softwares in the CS5 suite. Once this edit is all wrapped I’ll be sure to have a more in-depth post of my thoughts and experience with Premiere. For now this music video is all hush, but hope to leak some details soon.

In other news we’re just getting geared up for Crystalynes MuchFACT video. Just locking down some locations and tightening up some lose ends. Really looking forward to this video and will have some blog updates along the way.

That’s it for now. Sleep has been limited, but when you love what you’re doing there’s no complaining. Peas and carrots.

Passionate Philly Moves

March 31st, 2012

I haven’t blogged in a little while and thought this was the perfect time to sit down with my coffee while I have a little time to write about my boys in Philly Moves.

I’ve been working with JD Rockwell of the hip-hop group since as far back as I can remember kicking off my music video directing career with a music video we won for best punk/rock/metal unsigned artist at the 2008 Crave Fest Music Video Awards. He’s always been a talented, driven musician and producer. About two years ago he teamed up with talented Tynan Tragic. I’ve never met any other man who can rhyme and write like this guy. Now in full force with a move into the Toronto scene they are on the Juno’s bandwagon playing a show tonight with Canada’s own Swollen Members in Ottawa, ON.

Keep a close eye on this talented duo as they rock Toronto and the rest of the world with original sounding Canadian hip-hop. Follow them on twitter.

It’s always a pleasure working with smaller passionate artists who are in it for the music. Everything else will fall into place. Too many people give up too easily and this is an example of two guys who keep pushing through thick and thin.

More news in the next week about my next big music video shoot happening this month!

One love.

Handycam Andy

March 19th, 2012

Here it is, the camera which started it all in 2000. Everyone meet the Sony Handycam Hi8mm Digital.  I found this camera on amazon now going for about $175.00. At home I have a huge bin filled with old Hi8mm tapes and I’d love to one day go back and sift through all the endless hours of footage. There’s some great memories and laughs including some shorts titled Z Squared, SSU, Mississippi Blair Witch, Scooter Gangs and many more. When I was younger my friends and I would get together pretty well every weekend to shoot some kind of short which we would come up with in half an hour while drinking endless sugary Cokes and stuffing our faces with Doritos.

My mom always kept this box in our downstairs basement which we called the ‘Prop’ box. It contained beards, mustaches, masks, toy guns, hats, wigs, halloween makeup, outfits, you name it! You can only imagine all the thoughts that were going through our heads. Not to mention how much fun it was making homemade blood for your action sequences.

Remember it’s not always about the gear you have. It’s about how you use it and a camera with all the bells and whistles isn’t what’s going to tell a brilliant story. Keep shooting and shoot lots!
